The Ontario County Office for the Aging is looking for volunteers to go the extra mile for the older adults in their community. Many members of our community are in need of transportation to medical appointments, social engagements, and other life-enriching events.&nbsp;
If you enjoy driving, making your own schedule, and being reimbursed for mileage- all while helping a neighbor- then becoming a volunteer driver may be right for you!&nbsp;

The Town of Phelps dog license fee will increase as of January 1, 2025.
Please be advised that these fees are a direct result of a cost increase by Ontario County.
The cost for a new license or a license renewal for a Spayed or Neutered Dog will be $30.00 per dog.&nbsp;
The cost for a new license or a license renewal for an Unspayed or Unneutered Dog will be $35.00 per dog.&nbsp;

It is super helpful if packets can be picked up on Wednesday (the night before the race) from 5:00-7:00 p.m. &nbsp;at the Victor Town Hall. &nbsp;If you can't make it, no worries, the remaining packets will be available on Thanksgiving starting at 7:00 a.m. at the Victor Town Hall.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced the Establishing Large Forests (ELF) Grant Program, providing $4.5 million to support forest establishment on private lands. This program offers grants from $30,000 to $750,000 for private landowners with 5+ acres of unforested land to aid in site preparation, tree planting, removal of competing vegetation, and deer protection measures. ELF is part of the broader climate resilience initiative under Governor Hochul's "25 million Trees" project and aims to enhance biodiversity, air and water quality, and carbon storage.

<h3>RABIES&nbsp;</h3>
What is Rabies?&nbsp; Rabies is a viral disease that causes brain inflammation in humans and other mammals.&nbsp; It is spread through bites or scratches from infected animals.&nbsp; It can also be transmitted if the infected saliva comes into contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth.&nbsp; Once symptoms appear, the result is almost always death.&nbsp; Symptoms can appear 1 to 3 months after exposure.&nbsp;
Rabies Tips:
Observe all wild animals from a distance.&nbsp; A rabid animal may appear tame, but don't go near it.&nbsp;
Teach children to NEVER handle animals they don't know, even if they appear friendly.
Report ANY animal bite or possible Bat exposure to your local county public health department.
Wild animals should never be kept as pets.&nbsp; Do not try to pick up an injured or tame appearing animal if it does not belong to you.&nbsp; If you see any wild animal acting strangely - stay away from it and contact Animal Control.
If you have any questions, contact your public health office.
Rabies Facts:&nbsp; Rabies is most commonly found in dogs, bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes.
Signs: Fever, headache, partial paralysis, insomnia, anxiety, confusion, agitation, paranoia, terror, hallucinations and may have a fear of water.

This Independence Day, Please be courteous when setting off fireworks, which may be upsetting for dogs and Military Veterans. Loud, unexpected noises, such as fireworks can remind combat veterans with PTSD of gunfire or explosions they had experienced on the battlefield. Consider your neighbors by not setting them off too late at night or close to their homes, or better yet, go to an organized event!

Ontario County Bulky and Rigid Plastics Recycling Event on June 15, 2024 from 8:00AM to 11:00AM at Ontario County Landfill 3555 County Road 49 Stanley, NY 14561. Registration open from May 20 to June 12, or until full. Open and free to all Ontario County residents. Please review the Rigid Plastics Recycling Guide for a list of accepted materials. All materials must be CLEAN. Materials cannot contain debris, excessive dirt, or any chemical residues. Larger items should be disassembled so that they can be handled appropriately.

Ontario County Bulky and Rigid Plastics Recycling Event 

The Oaks Corners Volunteer Fire Department is offering a "911" Address Sign Program as a public safety project for the community.&nbsp; They are offering highly visible, home address number signs with reflective color backing and 3" reflective white numbers on both sides of the sign.&nbsp; They are designed to be installed on a mailbox post for the greatest visibility from the street.&nbsp; The sign that you order will be either green or red, depending on what style of construction your house or building is.&nbsp; The different in sign color is to alert the responding firefighters of the kind of construction your house or building is comprised of; green for standard-construction building and red for lightweight construction such as site-built and factory-built engineered homes. These building materials burn faster and collapse faster than traditional wood-frame buildings, which can result in Firefighter injury or death.&nbsp; If you are unsure which sign is appropriate for your address, please contact the fire house and they will help you identify which type of construction you have.&nbsp;
The cost of the sign is $25.00.&nbsp; If you need a mounting post for the sign, they are available at an additional cost of $5.00.&nbsp; For residents living in a mobile home park, there is available a 12"W x 6"H white aluminum sign with your lot number in black for $20.00.&nbsp; The Fire Department will come to your address and install the sign for no additional charge.&nbsp;

Pay attention: Keep eyes on the road especially while traveling through work zones. Avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, and conversations with passengers. Watch for signage indicating speed and lane changes as well as flaggers that may be directing travel.
Slow Down: Slow down while approaching a work zone. Lane closures and traffic pattern shifts are common in work zones. Follow the directions of the flagger.
Keep a safe distance: Rear end collisions account for many work zone accidents. Keep a safe distance between you and other cars, workers, and equipment. Expect the unexpected!
Plan Ahead: Stay up to date and check traffic reports before hitting the road. Leave early if you know you will have to travel through a work zone.&nbsp;
Be Patient: Road work and work zones can be inconvenient. Remember our crews are working to improve roads and make the roads safer.&nbsp;

<div>Phelps, NY &mdash; As part of the annual RecruitNY statewide initiative, the Oaks Corners Fire Department will open its doors so residents can learn how they can serve their volunteer fire department.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Volunteer fire departments across New York state have been faced with decreased membership and increased call volume. Like most volunteer fire departments, the Oaks Corners Fire Department needs to bolster its ranks so it can continue to provide the optimum level of protection for its residents.&nbsp;</div>

<div>As part of RecruitNY Weekend, the Oaks Corners Fire Department will open its doors on Saturday, April 13 from 10am until 3pm. The department is located at 607 Cross Road in the town of Phelps. It will join hundreds of volunteer fire departments across New York to raise public awareness regarding the need for volunteers and to highlight the rewards of being a member of a volunteer fire department.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Throughout the day, the Oaks Corners Fire Department will conduct tours of the station and apparatus, allow visitors to try on gear, demonstrate firefighting activities, provide information, and address questions on becoming a member. These activities give visitors a taste of what it means to be in the fire service. Volunteer firefighters will also be on hand to discuss the requirements and rewards of joining. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, including families with children.</div>

<div>&ldquo;We welcome the community to join us during RecruitNY Weekend,&rdquo; said Chief Zachery Rey &ldquo;This is an excellent opportunity for people to meet their local volunteer firefighters and learn more about the fire service. <div>The Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is committed to assisting New York&rsquo;s 1,700-plus volunteer departments connect with their communities and have sufficient members to protect them properly. Established in 2011, RecruitNY is an undertaking of FASNY. It is made possible by the continuing support and generosity of Lincoln Financial Group (LFG). In 2012, LFG announced the introduction of a new National Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP) HEROPLUSSM Program. A first of its kind, LOSAP was designed for individual fire and emergency services departments to help recruit, retain, and reward dedicated volunteers with a program that will help boost their retirement readiness.&nbsp;</div>

Elizabeth Wende Breast Care will facilitate a discussion via Zoom and answer questions about breast health,&nbsp; including the importance of knowing your family history, who should consider genetic testing, current&nbsp; mammography guidelines, and what age to begin mammography screening.
Three out of four women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease and are not considered high risk. &nbsp;Mammography has helped reduce breast cancer mortality in the U.S. by nearly 40% since 1990. &nbsp;1 in 6 breast cancers occur in women aged 40-49. &nbsp;Even for women over 50, skipping&nbsp; a mammogram every other year would miss up to 30% of cancers.
